This wip was started after using Ripplers Realism mod. I wanted to create something that added a challenge to driving off road and in muddy areas (Marsh south of Fort Zancudo/Dirt Track amongst various other places) unless the vehicle was an offroad vehicle. This mod also works on adding a bit of a challenge to driving on wet roads and puddles as well. I also wanted to modify shoot outs in a way that some materials were penetrable, as IRL.
Changes from 1.0
Features (WIP):
Features for Penetration Materials
Installation:
To Install, Navigate to your mods Folder. Navigate to Update/update/common/data/materials and replace "materials.dat".
This is still a WIP and will be updated as time allow. If at any time you don't like the mod, simply replace it with he default materials.dat outside of your "mods" folder. If youre using a custom "materials.dat", I would advise to use a program like notepad++w to manually modify the lines so nothing breaks.
Changes from 1.0
- Modified sand, mud, marsh values to reduce sliding and increase tire drag
- Modified snow and Ice values
- Modified penetration values of car metal and various other metals.
Features (WIP):
- Vehicles that are not off-road capable will have trouble traversing muddy terrain, marshes and other off-road areas. This includes getting stuck, which adds value to the use of the Tow truck. (which at the moment I've found out will also get stuck)
- Vehicles sink into muddy areas.
- Reduced traction to driving in grass, sand and other non-paved surfaces.
- Increased noisiness of certain materials in relation to stealh values (rumble strips, pot-holes, etc)
- Players and peds have a harder time running through muddy areas
Features for Penetration Materials
- Bullets penetrate vehicles. Still WIP on getting penetration resistance to bullets down
- Bullets penetrate other materials, such as plastic, hollow metals, cardboard boxes
- Reduced glass resistance for certain types of glass. For example, glass classified as "weak" is less resistant to bullets than glass classified as "Strong". By default, R* had all the values the same

Gave it a try and I like the concept but the mud is too slippery and feels like my car is on rails even when I don't accelerate which sends my car sliding sideways like I'm on ice...mud deepness is perfect its just the slipperiness that needs toned down. other than that good work I always like mods that works on surface realness. I remember having something like this for GTA San Andreas years back.
Nice job on these things!
nice job boy, the only thing is that some elements do not penetrate like the metal sheets or the yellow pillars and the light poles, the traffic lights .... can you solve it in the next release? thanks and good job.
This is awesome, great work. I go for realism so something like this is integral however, in order to achieve realistic traffic, my game literally spawns vehicles in area's it shouldn't. All the trails are gridlocked with supercars and other types of vehicle which have no place going off road. For me to get this mod working how it should be, i'm gonna have to tweak the nodes otherwise the only place i'll have moving traffic in Blaine County is the freeway but that's a me problem, thanks again for the great work!
awesome mod!!!, keep up the great work!!!
Holy shit this is an awesome mod.
I can tell you worked hard on this! really adds to the quality of the game thanks man!
@Slick_Nick I understand what you’re saying. The goal is to have mud be slippery but not overly slippery to where it simulates being on ice. I’m looking for semi-realism in that I want driving off road to not be as easy and “Arcadey” as it currently is. Right now I have a few values were I want them, for example sinking into the mud at the marshes and with deep mud , but I’m still working on the slippery balance. Thanks for the feedback
@Van_Zandt I love this mod. Makes driving in mud a challenge!
Can you add feature to penetrate bodies with high-caliber weapons?
@Scelerosus That relies more on weapon edits which I'm not looking to do. Materials modify the way bullets penetrate an object but it applies uniformly across the materials
If I only want to modify bullet penetration, what values should I modify?
@21821 towards the far right of the file are flags called shoot thru, shoot thru fx and a few others. Shoot thru however does apply penetration without regard to gun caliber. I’m experimenting with density but it looks only affects materials so much.
@Van_Zandt make the bullet shoot through the fence
@Van_Zandt I also have Ripplers Realism mod installed which allow bulltets go throught some soft materials, if I install your mod will it delete that fuction?
@llamaxus it will overwrite RR's material.dat file, so yes
its great mod no doubts, but for me nearly every car gets suck on sand or grass, even when they have off road tires. only real off road cars can drive on them
